History
Dr. William Carter Hutton built his home, Mt. Airy, in 1875 and named it after his home in Mt. Airy, NC. He and his wife, Julia Pegram Hutton, lived on the "pleasant home on the Harpeth River" and are buried in the cemetery located behind the barn on the property.
Dr. and Mrs. William Carter Hutton had seven children. One of their sons, Vernon, also became a doctor and lived and practiced medicine in the home.
The home was later sold to Paul Shields, who traveled to New Orleans and purchased the many chandeliers throughout the house and the coach lamps that hang on the front porch.
Mr. Shields sold the house to the Drake family who farmed the land and raised their children there. When Mr. Drake's health would no longer let him farm the land, he sold it to Doug and Evelyn Underwood in 1963. The home has been in their family since then and now has multiple houses for the family members who work the organic farm and run the event venue.
